Temporary Residence
Temporary Residence
There are many avenues to a Canadian work permit that you may not be aware of. Students or spouses/partners of students may get an open work permit in Canada as well. “Open” means that you can work for any employer in Canada. Most Canadian work permit applications are tied to a specific employer and position.
Foreign students must first enroll and be accepted to study at a Canadian educational institution/ Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in order to apply for a Student Visa in Canada. Foreign students also need a Temporary Resident Visa or eTA (electronic Travel Authorization), depending on their country of citizenship or habitual residence in addition to their Student Permit. Additionally, you must meet the following requirements for a Canada student visa:
You must have been accepted by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
You must prove that you have enough money to pay for your:
tuition fees
living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and
return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada.
You must be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada. You may have to provide a police certificate.
You must be in good health and willing to complete a medical examination, if necessary.
You must satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.
Our consultancy firm provides impeccable services to foreign students to select eligible programs of study and to help their spouse or common-law partner to get open work permits. We also offer services to students to stay in Canada after they finish their program of study by applying for a work permit or for permanent residence.
Please Note: You must apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit no later than 90 days after receiving written confirmation of graduating (a transcript or an official letter) in order to be eligible. You must also make sure you still have status as a student (your study permit did not expire) when you apply.
A Visitor visa is also called a Temporary Resident Visa. It allows you to enter Canada as a visitor. Once you enter Canada on a visitor visa, even if your passport is not stamped by a border services officer you can stay for 6 months. If your passport is stamped by a border services officer, you need to leave Canada by the date indicated on the stamp.
If you are in Canada on a visitor visa and want to extend your stay, you can make an application for a Visitor Record from within Canada. A Visitor Record is not a visa.
A super visa lets you visit your children or grandchildren for 5 years at a time. It is a visa that provides multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years. Medical insurance is required from an insurer in Canada. As a super visa holder, you need to renew and/or maintain your medical insurance while in Canada and on re-entry. Your child or grandchild must meet the minimum income threshold.
A TRP is a document that authorizes a person who is inadmissible or does not meet the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act or Regulations either as a temporary resident or as a permanent resident to enter or remain in Canada.
If you are inadmissible to Canada, family members (spouse, common-law partner, and dependent children) traveling with you are also inadmissible and may or may not be issued an initial TRP. If the officer forms an opinion that it is justified in the circumstances for all family members to remain in Canada, then each family member will be given their own TRP and they are each permit holders in their own right.
A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker. After the LMIA is approved the worker can apply for a work permit.
To apply for a work permit, a worker needs a job offer letter, a contract, a copy of the LMIA, and the LMIA number.
If you are visiting from a visa-exempt Country, you require an Electronic Travel Authorization, also called eTA, to travel to Canada. The validity of eTA is 5 years and it is electronically linked to your passport, if you get a new passport, you will require a new eTA.
